Recycling 3000 tons of steel

The Greenfields Paper Mill, near Oldham, is being demolished by D Hughes Demolition. With over 3,000 tons of steel to remove and recycle, they turned to Inmalo, who are suppliers of the powerful Eagle 3, SH490R scrap shear, which was fitted to a new Hitachi ZX530 LCH 7.

The Eagle SH490R Shear Supplied by Inmalo

The Greenfields site contains a wide mix of steel fabrication, castings and equipment of challenging sizes and strength. The Eagle SH490R Shear is sufficiently powerfull to cope with this mix of steels which are inherently tough, due to the early foundary processes of the day. Managing Director Ryan Hughes, jumps in the cab of his new Hitachi in the video below to demonstrate the MBI SH490's capability over various types of steel. Ryan admits that the Mantovanibenne SH490R shear has made the job quick and easy to process.

Overview

Greenfields is a glimpse into the past. An industrial landmark soon to be lost. Sitting beside the stunning Dove Stone Reservoir, this mill has stood for over a century. So, we couldn’t produce a video without showing you some of the area and pre demolition pictures.

Originally built by the Crompton family, their first mill opened in Stoneclough in 1829. After John Crompton’s passing, the Fletcher family took over, establishing the Greenfield Mill in 1921. They also owned hundreds of acres of surrounding farmland, supporting mixed agriculture. Greenfield Mill became known for producing fine tissue, cigarette papers, and high-quality paper stocks. Seven machines ran on the production line, already old technology, which by the end of the 90’s, - just three, modern machines, could operate far more efficiently.

Demolition Project for Greenfield

However, time caught up with Greenfield. Outdated technology, rising wood pulp costs, and increasing energy prices made operations unsustainable. By the late ‘90s, Robert Fletcher & Son Limited's, two mills, were struggling to compete. In July 2001, creditors filed for A Winding Up order. The factory was left abandoned—hauntingly derelict for over two decades. In 2024, D Hughes took on the task of demolishing the site, paving the way for future redevelopment.
